Laws are P=NP
I just finished the Law section of my Honors College class KHC HC302. I very much enjoyed taking it and it shows me once more how valuable it is to branch out. Generally, the American attitude to higher education seems more appropriate than Germany's I-just-study-my-major-philosophy. But that's another discussion.
Especially in the last discussion, the metaphor in the title became obvious to me. We have so much drama about politics, legislations and regulations, SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, Debt Ceiling, that sometimes we forget this crucial dilemma we have:
It's is very easy to criticize, assess and analyze a piece of legislation, but coming up with a single piece of legislation that satisfies everyone is virtually impossible. Just as a solution to P=NP problems (Wikipedia) are easy to verify, but hard to come up with, legislation and political compromises are an unsolved phenomenon.
We all have very different opinions on how the world should be, some are more vocal than other, some are more powerful than others, but we should never forget that living together in a civilized way where we can tolerate our differences is not a right we have, it is a privilege that our ancestors gave their live for us.
